There are a number of things to take a look at when selecting a power supply for your machine. It is essential that everything is compatible and matching so that everything works appropriately without any hitches. This will also ensure that you are working safely and using power efficiently as possible.
A 3D printer requires a minimum amount of power, expressed in watts at a certain voltage. Modern 3D printers will mostly use 24V however we advise that you always check the specifications on the product page for further recommendations on spare power supplies. It is possible to use a higher watt power supply than the current one in the 3D printer. It does however not work to use a lower watt supply than the one your 3D printer has installed. What is most important is that the output voltage matches. Increased power will generally result in a bigger power supply and if that supply is physically too large, it can be that the power supply will not fit your 3D printer.
It is crucial that the power supply is compatible with your local mains voltage. This will differ depending on where you are situated. The whole of Europe and the UK have a mains voltage of 240V while the United States has a standard 115V.
The wiring between your power supply and 3D printer must be able to handle the maximum current of the power supply. Standard wiring can be used to connect the power supply to the mains. Make sure that your wire is correctly insulated and safe as there is always a higher voltage coming from the mains.

Start by checking that your power supply’s voltage matches with the mains voltage. A 240V power supply will work on 230V mains voltage since the power supply can handle voltages up to 240V. Select a UK/US/EU power plug depending on your region. It is safe to swap an EU power plug for a UK one as power plugs have been made to share the same voltage amount.
On the power supply, there are clear symbols that also assist you in properly connecting the wiring. In fact, there are three wires that need to be connected to the mains. There is a yellow-green wire that needs to be connected to the ground (⏚). N is the null and must be connected to the blue wire and L is line and should be connected to the brown wire. N and L can be swapped as it's an alternating current. For this reason, the EU plug can be connected in reverse.
Most power supplies have three V- and V+ connectors. V+ is wired using red or sometimes also yellow wires to the + on the electrics of the 3D printer. V- is connected using black wires to the - of the electronics. Make sure to not swap these wires! Some electronics that perform heating, like a heated bed and heater cartridge do not have a polarization, so it doesn't matter what side the + and - applies to. Peripherals like fans, mainboards, stepper drivers, and LEDs do require correct polarization.

The power supply will stop working and the fuse in your mains may trigger. There is also a high risk that the electronics in your 3D printer will be damaged.
If you swap + and -, it is likely that your electronics will be permanently damaged. Some electronics do not have polarization and are therefore not affected by this. But it is safe to assume that many electronics will have ever-lasting damage if they are swapped.
It is fine to use a higher-rated power supply for your 3D printer. It is however not possible to use a lower watt supply. Always make sure that the output voltage matches your machine so that you are working safely.
If your 3D printer is using more power than the power supply is able to deliver, it could trigger the safety in the power supply and shut down. This can also cause parts of your machine to start melting and result in irreversible damage.
