3D extruder components

The extruder is a crucial part of a 3D printer, consisting of a series of smaller components. The function of the extruder is to extrude filament through the 3D printer’s nozzle. The extruder is sometimes also referred to as the cold end since it is located at the top of the extrusion system before the filament is heated. A 3D printer’s extruder is supported by several parts. The stepper motors and gears will guide the filament in an extruder and the thermistor will regulate and provide the intended temperatures. Cooling the extruded filament is crucial to improve overhang and smaller details and this is typically done by a part cooling fan. 3D Temperature sensors

Temperature sensors are electronic parts known as thermistors and thermocouples that measure temperatures in their surroundings. Thermistors are fully referred to as thermally sensitive resistors. In an FDM/FFF 3D printer, you can find a thermistor in the heated bed​​ and the heat block. Thermistors and thermocouples convert information back to the controller which in turn reacts and instructs them further. The firmware has to be constantly aware of the thermistors and thermocouples to ensure that temperatures are maintained throughout prints based on G-code instruction and to also avoid overheating. Heater cartridges

Heater cartridges are another important component for 3D printers. They ensure that your hot end reaches the intended temperature as fast as possible. A heater cartridge is a heating element that allows your nozzle to be a hot end and melt filament accordingly. TIP: For a fast and accurate heat transfer between the heating element of your 3D printer, you can use the heat transfer pad for optimal heat transfer. Filament detection

Without filament detection, the status and of the filament would be unknown in relation to the 3D printer. Filament detection sensors and monitors are extremely useful and will notify you when the filament is broken or has run out during a print. The 3D printer will pause and save its current progress. If a printer does not pause when the filament runs out, this can cause the hotend to overheat and clog the nozzle or PTFE tubing. Avoid failed prints with filament detection, and pick up where you left off after loading more filament.

Bowden extrusion

FDM/FFF 3D printers have two printing techniques; the direct drive and the Bowden system. A Bowden extrusion system is the most commonly used technique for 3D printing. What distinguishes the systems from one another is the positioning of the cold end. A Bowden 3D printer will have the extruder placed on the frames and bars instead of being directly attached to the hot end. There are many advantages when 3D printing using the Bowden technique. The distancing of the extruder head and hot end means that you can 3D print without additional weight on the 3D printer’s nozzle. For this reason, 3D printing is also achieved faster and with more precision. There are also certain disadvantages when printing with the Bowden extrusion system. For example, printing flexible filament is difficult and requires more retraction in order to avoid stringing. Select the best nozzle for your 3D printer

3D printer nozzles or hot ends push out the melted filament onto your print surface. Choosing the right nozzle for your 3D model will significantly benefit the print and avoid clogging.
