About PVA filament

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a filament material well known to reinforce 3D materials such as PLA filament. The filament has a white translucent appearance and is resistant to oil and grease. One of the best aspects of PVA filament is its water-soluble properties allowing easy removal of the filament’s support structures. For this reason, it is crucial to avoid moisture and store your PVA filament correctly in a dry box or use silica gel bags.

Printing with PVA filament

PVA filament has been created to be used by a 3D printer with a dual extrusion system. One extruder will typically print PLA filament while the second extruder prints PVA filament support structures. Our multi-head 3D printers will allow you to successfully print with two filament materials simultaneously.

The printing temperature and heated bed temperature for your PVA filament will slightly vary depending on your 3D printer and the brand of PVA filament that is being used. Always check the manufacturer’s printing instructions and experiment with your 3D printer to find the settings that work best. A great brand that guarantees high-quality prints is Real Filament. In case you would like to use another material for the 3D model, we have special PVA filament for PETG filament.

PVA filament is non-toxic and biodegradable when recycled properly. Do avoid exposing PVA filament to natural light as it is highly sensitive to UV radiation. In case your PVA filament has absorbed moisture, it is advised to place it in the oven at a low temperature for a short amount of time before you start printing to avoid printing errors.

Printing with PVA filament support structures

There are a number of settings and configurations to take into account when printing support structures. The foundation is the most important, hence proper adhesion will make or break the quality and function of a support structure. Select a density that will best support your 3D part. The angle of your overhang will determine how much PVA filament support is required. A 3D printing software will often automatically generate support structures for your models which you can then adjust to your preferences.

How to easily remove PVA filament from 3D models

Once your print is complete and has cooled down it is time to remove the PVA filament support structures. The supports can sometimes be broken off by hand however be careful if you choose to do so as this could damage the print. The first most important step is to submerge the printed part in a container of warm water. This will effectively dissolve the PVA filament structures. Any excess material can be removed with pliers. The water used to dissolve the support structures can be disposed of down the drain given that you live in a region with water networks linked to a waste treatment plant.

PVA plus and PVA pro

View our special PVA filament by the premium brand Real Filament. The PVA plus filament has been specially developed to function as a support material for many thermoplastics such as PLA filament and PETG filament. We also offer PVA pro filament which works in high temperatures and bonds well with ABS filament, ASA filament, and TPU filament.

Domande frequenti

PVA filament has been made to bond well with PLA filament, providing excellent support for PLA 3D models and parts. PVA plus filament has been specifically developed to bond with materials such as PETG filament and ABS filament. Our PVA pro filament bonds well with ABS filament, ASA filament, and TPU filament.
